Natural Remedies for Illness at Sea
sailing   When out sailing with the family, like checking the weather, it’s always best to be prepared for any health problems that can arise and spoil your trip. Trauma/Accidents and bumps
Homeopathic remedies
> Arnica Montana
This is used to treat any injuries, bruises, cuts and bumps, also shocks and emotional trauma. Useful for jet lag too.
> Rhus tox.
For injuries to muscles and tendons, particularly if overstrained. It helps to prevent stiffness and aching the following day. The pain is worst by rest and better by heat and movement.
> Hypericum.
This remedy is used for injuries to areas rich in nerve endings, such as fingers and toes. The pain quality is a shooting nerve pain.

Tummy Trouble
Homeopathic remedies
> Nux vomica
The No. 1 hangover remedy, (keeps sailors happy the morning after the night before). Useful for irritable, fastidious workaholics. Calms the nervous system.
> Arsenicum album
Yes, arsenic! The Queen’s favourite remedy for food poisoning and diarrhoea

Seasickness
Homeopathic remedies
> Cocculus indicus
A great remedy for sea and carsickness. Symptoms include dizziness, weakness of the neck, excess saliva with thirst. Vertigo and nausea, aversion to the open air.
> Tabaccum
Motion sickness, nausea and profuse sweating which is worse by opening the eyes. The patient has excessive saliva which is spat out.

Accupressure magnetic bands
The pressure point for nausea is located at the centre of the wrist, 2 finger breadths up from the wrist crease. The band can be bought from Boots and be worn like a watch, over the point.

Sunburn
The sun is particularly strong between 11am and 2pm, take adequate precautions such as covering up, wearing a hat, applying sunscreen, especially for little ones. Also, drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.

Homeopathic remedies
> Belladonna
The No. 1 fever and sunburn remedy, especially for children. The patient is red, feels hot with burning skin. There is mental restlessness, which is worse by noise and light and ameliorated in a quiet, dark room. There is thirst, particularly for lemons and lemonade.
> Glonoine
An acute sunburn remedy with sudden, violent symptoms. Symptoms include flushes of heat accompanied by a pulsating headache. The patient cannot bear any heat on the head. The face is pale; respiration is difficult, with vomiting and a sinking in the pit of the stomach.

Anxiety/Panic Attacks
Some of us can get anxious when out at sea; there is a feeling of being out of control. Being away from the shore, with only a vast expanse of water in sight can be unnerving and sometimes can lead to anxiety attacks.

Homeopathic remedies
> Aconitum napellus
A valuable remedy for anxiety with restlessness, tingling, numbness, formication, tossing about and fear of death. These are unreasonable and unaccountable fears accompanied by palpitations. The symptoms arise suddenly and acutely, sometimes occurring after a fright or a shock.
> 3 A’s
This is a combination of 3 homeopathic remedies, useful for the anticipatory anxiety that accompanies unusual events such as- sailing, flying, taking exams, interviews etc. This marvellous remedy has to be ordered from a homeopathic pharmacy and can be taken before and during the event. It helps to keep the patient calm, focussed and relaxed, without any side effects.
